The pre-Albian, earlier Cretaceous features a pangaeic type arid region straddling the equator as does the older Mesozoic. Cool/cold climate regions at high southern and northern latitudes include glendonites and dropstones in northern Siberia, Svalbard, Arctic Canada, northeastern Alaska and eastern Australia; this is the interval of highest global climatic gradient during the Period, and.   The Cretaceous Period began million years ago (Mya) and ended 66 Mya. It lasted for 79 million years. It was the longest period of the Mesozoic Era. It was the third and final period of the Mesozoic Era. The Cretaceous Period was preceded by the Jurassic Period, and followed by the Paleogene Period.

This assumption is based on the almost complete lack of Middle Jurassic deposits, removed in this region by Late Cretaceous-Cenozoic erosion (Pieńkowski et al. ). However, it is possible that. Cretaceous Period - Cretaceous Period - Paleoclimate: In general, the climate of the Cretaceous Period was much warmer than at present, perhaps the warmest on a worldwide basis than at any other time during the Phanerozoic Eon. The climate was also more equable in that the temperature difference between the poles and the Equator was about one-half that of the present.

The Jurassic Period itself is divided into three parts, called epochs. Each epoch corresponds to a layer of rock in the main Jurassic Layer. Epochs of the Jurassic Period: Early Jurassic: – Mya; Middle Jurassic: – Mya; Late Jurassic: – Mya. A Late Cretaceous (Campanian) leaf megaflora from the Vomb Trough in southern Skåne, Sweden, has been investigated on the basis of collections held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History. The main plant-bearing locality is Köpinge, but single specimens originate from Högestad, Ingelstorp, Rödmölla, Svenstorps mölla and Tosterup.

The Jurassic and Early Cretaceous selachian faunas of Scania (Skåne), southern Sweden and the island of Bornholm (Denmark) have been investigated. Southern Scandinavia, including Scania. Apart from Denmark, Mesozoic sediments in Scandinavia are mainly exposed in southern Sweden (i.e.

Scania), and the Late Cretaceous is represented by marine limestones of Santonian to Early Maastrichtian by:   1. Introduction. In the last few years, climatic proxy data have increasingly led to challenges of the traditional view of a uniform or equable Jurassic climate (e.g.

Hudson and Anderson,Hallam,Hallam,Ditchfield,Price, ).The main problems in determining the Jurassic palaeoclimate variability are: (1) most of the climate proxy data is scattered in time and Cited by:   This chart is a simple overview of the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods, all of which were part of the Mesozoic era.

In brief, this incredibly long period of time, measured in "mya" or "millions of years ago," saw the development of dinosaurs, marine reptiles, fish, mammals, flying animals including pterosaurs and birds, and a huge range of plant life.

Lund Publications in. The Cretaceous (/ k r ɪ ˈ t eɪ. ʃ ə s /, krih-TAY-shəs) is a geological period that lasted from about to 66 million years ago (mya). It is the third and final period of the Mesozoic Era, as well as the name is derived from the Latin creta, 'chalk'.

It is usually abbreviated K, for its German translation Kreide. The Cretaceous was a period with a relatively warm climate.

In the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (to the south and north of the Tianshan orogen), coal measures of Early–Middle Jurassic ages (J 1 –J 2) were widely folded and thrust faulted, and then covered by Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous molasse-like sediments (Hendrix et al.,Sobel,Robinson et al., ).

Cretaceous Period, in geologic time, the last of the three periods of the Mesozoic Cretaceous began million years ago and ended 66 million years ago; it followed the Jurassic Period and was succeeded by the Paleogene Period (the first of the two periods into which the Tertiary Period was divided).

The Cretaceous is the longest period of the Phanerozoic Eon. Early Jurassic environments similar to those on Bornholm are known to have supported a rich dinosaur fauna in nearby Scania, southern Sweden, which was connected to Bornholm during most of the Mesozoic (Surlyk et al; Michelsen et al.

The extinct fern genus Coniopteris was a typical component in the Mesozoic flora with a wide distribution in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres from Early Jurassic to Early Cretaceous, and it played a very important role in stratigraphic correlation, while its character evolution and systematic position have both been unsolved mysteries.

In this paper, a basin evolution model for the Middle Jurassic–Early Cretaceous rift phase of the cross-border Central Graben area in Denmark, Germany and The Netherlands is presented ().This study builds on earlier work from TNO (Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research) on the Dutch Central Graben (Herngreen & Wong ; Van Adrichem Boogaert & Kouwe ; Abbink et al.

Abstract. Using a combination of previous studies, some reinterpreted, and material from the Barremian of the Southern Carnarvon Platform and the middle–late Albian of the Exmouth Plateau, the distribution of ostracods from Jurassic and Early Cretaceous sediments of Western Australia is used for analyzing evolution of the Indian Ocean.

Rees, Jurassic and Early Cretaceous selachians. Focus on southern Scandinavia, Doctoral thesis, Lund, Sweden, (unpublihed). Three years of Danerkrae - a law, and what it has achieved.

Mass extinctions are insanely catastrophic, but important, events that punctuate the history of life on Earth. The Jurassic/Cretaceous boundary, around million years ago, was originally thought of to represent a mass extinction, but has subsequently been ‘down-graded’ to a minor extinction event based on new discoveries.

However, compared to other important stratigraphic boundaries.A Late Cretaceous (Campanian) leaf megaflora from the Vomb Trough in southern Skåne, Sweden, has been investigated on the basis of collections held at the Swedish Museum of Natural History. The Early Cretaceous (geochronological name) or the Lower Cretaceous (chronostratigraphic name), is the earlier or lower of the two major divisions of the Cretaceous.

It is usually considered to stretch from Ma to Ma.
