Old Sheffield silver is often in remarkably good condition with little or no bleeding (copper showing through). This is because it is the unique property of Sheffield plate that it is sterling silver over copper (not pure silver, as is the case with both close plate and electroplate).   The history of Sheffield plate and silverplate reflects the changes in society from the midth through the 19th centuries. Originally a luxury that only the super rich could afford, silver expanded by the mid 19th century into a huge cutting edge industry that produced elegant items which discriminating individuals from the middle class could.

Smithsonian Libraries, Natural History Building, 10 th St. and Constitution Ave. NW, Washington DC, Silversmiths in the town of Sheffield, England typically produced identical wares in sterling silver, which they sold at higher prices than those fabricated from Sheffield silver. Like many great inventions, the process of Sheffield plating was discovered accidentally in by Thomas Boulsover of Sheffield’s Cutler Company.

Oh, yes, we’ll admit it, we’re silver foxes—as in, always on the hunt for vintage Silverplate & Sheffield Plate. Vintage Silverplate & Sheffield Plate was once considered to be a less expensive alternative to sterling (as it’s silver layered on top of copper), but today it resides comfortably as the grand dame.
